Located just outside Montgomery, the town of Pike Road offers a perfect blend of urban convenience and serene natural beauty. But many are yet unaware of Pike Road’s “hidden gem” that makes living here especially wonderful — a 30-mile-long multi-use Natural Trail. Funded by a grant from the Federal Highway Administration, the Trail will ultimately provide both recreational and educational benefits to residents.
With Phase 1 already complete and Phase 2 in process, this innovative nature trail is designed to connect all of Pike Road’s neighborhoods, as well as providing an “outdoor classroom” along the half-mile stretch that runs behind the new Pike Road School. Phase 1 is a 4-mile segment that parallels Meriwether Road between Pike Road and U.S.-231. The southern trailhead offers picnic areas, restrooms and a pavilion, with similar facilities planned for the northern trailhead. Residents are already taking advantage of this stretch of the trail for exercise, horseback riding and nature walks. When fully complete, the trail will link more than 40 neighborhoods along a stretch of approximately 30 miles.
The exciting thing about the Natural Trail is that it’s designed for more than just exercise or communing with nature. It has an educational component as well. When complete, the trail will double as an interactive historic timeline of the area, with signposts along the trail tracing the history from the early settlers to modern day. In addition, an outdoor classroom is planned for the stretch of trail alongside Pike Road Schools, complete with gardening facilities and an exercise loop around the school. Posts along the trail will provide information about the natural wildlife and natural habitats of the Pike Road area.
The Pike Road Natural Trail is a key component of the town’s long-term vision for building an interconnected community that emphasizes health and wellness, all while preserving the natural beauty of the area.
